Carbon-Fiber Atzei Chaim - Strength, Lightness and Precision in Honor of the Torah
The beauty of Atzei Chaim begins with their design, but their quality starts within. Carbon fiber allows us to rethink the internal structure and pursue a careful balance of strength, low weight and appropriate proportions.
What is carbon fiber, and why did we choose it?
Carbon fiber is an advanced material used in aerospace, aviation and the automotive industry. In structural applications, carbon fibers are combined with a resin binder to form a composite with a high strength-to-weight ratio.
This advantage led us to consider its use in Atzei Chaim: a light, rigid structure with dimensions suited to its purpose and to the Torah scroll.
Rethinking the central rod
The rod on which the parchment is wound is a key component of Atzei Chaim. Its diameter, weight and strength influence the design of the entire piece.
Rather than relying only on a wooden rod of the usual diameter, we chose to incorporate carbon fiber into the internal structure. Our aim is to reduce thickness and weight where possible while retaining the required strength.
Precision means choosing the right rod diameter, wall thickness and connections, rather than making everything as small as possible.
Less bulk at the center - more design possibilities
Reducing the diameter of the rod on which the parchment is wound can also reduce the outer diameter of the roll. The amount depends on the length and thickness of the parchment and how it is wound.
The plate diameter can also be considered in relation to the scroll's actual measurements. This allows the rod, parchment and plates to work together in more carefully balanced proportions.
Lightness you can feel. Beauty you can see.
Large plates and thick rods add bulk and, depending on the materials, weight. Matching them to the required dimensions may help make a Torah scroll easier to carry and lift, with a balanced, less cumbersome appearance.
We therefore design the Atzei Chaim as a whole: the internal structure, plates, handles and finishes are planned together, so the external beauty rests on careful internal design.
Innovation with respect for tradition
Using an advanced material for Atzei Chaim also raises a halachic question: does the name, literally "trees of life," require wood?
A halachic response permits other materials while also addressing the importance of preserving the custom of using wood. The structure and materials should therefore be chosen in accordance with the guidance of the supervising rabbi and the community's custom.
For us, innovation and respect for tradition belong together.
The idea behind the piece
The idea of incorporating carbon fiber into the company's Atzei Chaim originated with our CEO, Rabbi Avraham Chazin, from a practical need: finding a way to combine strength, lightness and precision in an object made in honor of a Torah scroll.
The aim was to reconsider even the unseen details and give them the same attention we devote to the design, materials and external finish.
Every detail - in honor of our holy Torah
Carbon fiber is part of a broader approach: thinking through every detail, fitting the structure to the Torah scroll, and finding solutions that combine comfort, quality and aesthetics.
A piece made in honor of the Torah should be impressive on the outside and carefully designed within.
